Hon. Ahmed Mohammed calls on the State Government to fix our Public Schools
Wednesday 9th May, 2018
From the Legislative Chambers, Ankpa LGA
KOGI STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY LOKOJA
MOTION CALLING ON THE STATE GOVERNMENT TO IMMEDIATELY DECLARE A STATE OF EMERGENCY ON ALL GOVERNMENT PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN KOGI STATE.
The Rt. Honourable Speaker, my Distinguish colleagues, Education is the best legacy any government can give to her citizen, and as such, the importance of education as a key to manpower development and socio-economic growth in any given society cannot be overemphasized. It is one of the very important stages of education that prepares students ahead of higher tasks, eradicate illiteracy, ignorance and poverty as well as stimulate and accelerate national development.
Whereas, the State of our Public Schools in Kogi State is nothing to write home about. Our Public Schools which was a toast in its hay days is now an eyesore. Schools that have produced lots of very prominent persons to the society now lack facilities. The teaching environment is not conducive, all the buildings have completely collapsed and overgrown by weeds, dilapidated blocks of classrooms, broken doors, windows, scruffy chalkboards and no recreational facilities for students, and it is said to be responsible for the recent fall in the academic performance of the students, significant fall of students population and candidates for external examination. In fact, the school structure is completely collapsed.
PRAYERS:
Be it resolved by this Honourable house as follows;
1. That the state government gives an urgent attention to all Public Schools in Kogi State.
2. That adequate resource is allocated to equip the laboratories and workshops, text books and training manuals for students.
3. That the curriculum taught in our Public Schools be reviewed to meet the demands of the current educational standard.
4. That the house committee on Education carry out an on-the-spot assessment to all Public Schools in Kogi State and present the report before the house in no distant time.
I so moved.
Dated this day 9th of May, 2018
Hon. Ahmed Mohammed
Ankpa 1 Constituency
